St. Vincent College Student: Alecko Fekos
My name is Alecko Fekos. I am a senior criminology and psychology double major who currently works as a group home youth counselor for Adelphoi Village.
As a Fred Rogers Scholar, a youth counselor, and an individual who has conducted interviews with recovering addicts, I care deeply about the safety of at-risk youth, with specific emphasis on informing youth about the dangers of adolescent drug use. I know that this is a particularly pervasive issue in Westmoreland County, and I also know how important it is for youth to understand the profound, negative impacts that come with drug use.
I have a role model coworker at Adelphoi Village named Alex Yawitz. Not only does he work at my group home in Latrobe, but he also has an innate ability to leave a positive impression on even some of the most stubborn and aggressive youth. This is not only because he is kind, respectful, and hardworking, but also because he can relate to our clients on a personal level, as he himself is an Adelphoi alumnus.
He is extremely open about his past struggles and the times he spent in a group home, and I have found his journey and life turnaround to be particularly moving, impactful, and inspiring. As a Westmoreland County native, he understands the dangers and extent of the drug crisis in our area.
Alex is also a motivational speaker. He has done countless local, professional speeches about his journey and has received outstanding reviews from the institutions and organizations that have been lucky enough to have him speak.
